You Heard It There First – Vol. 4 (ATCQ Edition)

A couple of years ago, the daughter of my ex-boss was having a birthday and so myself and two co-workers got her a copy of A Tribe Called Quest’s Peoples’ Instinctive Travels and Paths of Rhythm. She was turning 14 at the time and was listening to a strict diet of crappy hip-hop that one hears on any given radio station. The sad news – the album didn’t take with her. The good news – well, the good news is that her opinion doesn’t matter. I think there have been 3 cassette tapes that I listened to so much back in the day that the lettering faded off them completely and this would be one of them (the others: De La Soul “3ft. High..” and RUN DMC’s “Raising Hell”).

Anyways, this post isn’t even about that album but it is about ATCQ. Below are some choice samples used on their second album the Low End Theory. Enjoy…

  1. Sweet list.

You wouldn’t happen to know what the sample they used in “Butter” is, do you? The saxophone sample sounds like John Coltrane, but I can’t put my finger on it.

  2. Yeah, It sounds a lot like the Coltrane sound but it is by Gary Bartz – the track is Gentle Smile.
